I had a dream recently that I was singing Spinning Plates (Radiohead). In real life this would be a bad bad thing as I sound like an agonised cat when I sing for real (maybe why I like a lot of ambient tracks) but no in this dream I sang it very well; least in my head I did.

Basically I was on a train, I think it was an underground train and it was busy, I got on and found my way into a corner, my headphones were on and this track had been playing over and over. I thought I was singing along to it in my head (as you do) but as the track finished I could hear noise, I turned to face the carriage and people were applauding me. I had obviously been singing it out loud, and very well judging by the reactions.

I wish I could actually sing well for real, perhaps the dream was a need for something. I know that I had actually listened to that track about 6 times yesterday at various points so it was certainly in my thoughts. the facing away from the carriage was maybe my real persona as I am not a seeker of attention. I hope this (The singing on a train or anywhere else for that matter) doesn’t happen for real for if it did the carriage would be empty when I turn around not full of applauding people, I don’t mind admitting that when I woke up there was a tear in my eye.

But oh my listen to this tune, the piano at the beginning, listen to that piano, put your headphones on, stop everything else you are doing and listen to that bloody piano, This is a track that needs you to stop what you are doing and just listen, Imagine yourself at that gig, with that band and those fans listening to that, I get goose bumps just thinking about it. Then Thom Yorke’s haunting voice overlaid. What a fantastic track and the live version (linked) is so much better than the studio version. (although that you tube video doesn’t have the clarity and strength of track that I have on my player)

To me it is very much a political song and I normally avoid those. I read up on it and some people believe it to be about the Genocide in Rwanda and from the lyrics I would imagine that if not that it is something at least as bad somewhere else in the world. Others seem to think it is about Greek mythology, I don’t feel that in the lyrics though. But then I can never decipher lyric meanings. What do you think?

Like Spinning Plates

While you make pretty speeches,
I’m being cut to shreds
You feed me to the lions,
a delicate balance

And this just feels like spinning plates
I’m living in cloud cuckoo land
And this just feels like spinning plates
Our bodies floating down the muddy river
